Orcrist Sword Scabbard In Third Age of Middle-earth, Thorin Oakenshield and his Company of Dwarves came upon a troll lair in Rhûdaur. There they found two Elvish swords and a knife. The exact history of these swords is not certain, but when Elrond examined them in Rivendell he determined they were well known and ancient blades used in the Goblin Wars to slay may Orcs in the First Age. The weapons were named Orcrist and Glamdring and were forged by the high Elves of the West, in Gondolin. The original owner of Orcrist is unknown, nor is it known how the sword survived and escaped the destruction of Gondolin. Elrond surmised it had been taken by dragons or Orcs, when they destroyed and plundered that great city. Upon hearing the history of this legendary blade, Thorin claimed it for his own and vowed to cleave Goblins with it once again. He wielded the sword through most of the Quest for Erebor, using it against the Goblins of the Misty Mountains. The Goblins called it "Biter" and hated and feared it. The inscriptions on the sword (sold separately) and scabbard are in the Sindarin language, engraved in Cirth runes. Hilt Inscription (both sides): On the guard is the name Orcrist "Goblin-cleaver". Blade Inscription (both sides): Nagol e-lyg "The serpent's tooth". Scabbard Inscription (both sides): Onnen o goew ith-luig "Born from the maws of dragons". Ui ni madweg a suig "I am always hungry and thirsty". The most likely original owner of Orcrist was the Elf Ecthelion, for his House of the Fountain herald is engraved into its jeweled pommel. Ecthelion was one of the most valuable captains of Turgon, King of the hidden city of Gondolin. During the fifth battle against Morgoth, Turgon and his forces aided the army of the Union of Maedhros. When the battle failed, Ecthelion and Glorfindel of the Golden Flower guarded the host of Gondolin's flank while they retreated into the mountains, escaping back to Gondolin, which remained hidden from the enemy. Many years later, as Gondolin was finally discovered and attacked by its enemies, Ecthelion confronted Gothmog, the Lord of the Balrogs. The two fought a legendary duel and Ecthelion accomplished a deed which even Feanor, the greatest and the most wrathful of the elves, could not; The slaying of a Balrog. Ecthelion died in that battle and Gondolin was destroyed, but somehow the sword Orcrist survived, only to be found ages later by Thorin and his companions.
